IFIN-HH Bucharest-Magurele offers conditions for experiments of nuclear physics for astrophysics (NA), in particular alpha-induced reactions and reactions between light ions, through direct measurements at low and very low energies. The institute has a 3-MV tandetron, which works for applications and for NA. Its duoplasmatron and sputter source deliver a diversity of beams with intensities of the order of tens of microamperes.

In-beam measurements can be done using high resolution HPGe detectors for gamma-rays and silicon detectors for charged particles (in a 120 cm diameter target chamber). More sensitivity was demonstrated using de-activation measurements using a dedicated beta-gamma coincidence setup for half-lifes larger than 3 to 5 minutes. An extra opportunity is provided by the ultra-low background laboratory the institute has
underground in a salt mine located about 120 km north of Bucharest-Magurele, in Slanic-Prahova for activities with longer decay times, corresponding to half-lifes of more than 1 to 2 hours. There background reduction factors up to 4000 were obtained.

IFIN-HH has three tandem accelerators (9-MV, 3-MV and 1-MV maximum voltages) that are all internationally open facilities. The 1 MV tandetron in the same department is specialized in Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS), with applications in radiocarbon dating, geology, nuclear forensics, pharmacology, environmental studies and any other field that needs precise measurement of isotopic ratios. It is used in and available for cosmochemistry projects. The 3-MV Tandetron could deliver beam time for the duration of the project. With the approval of PAC, projects in cosmochemistry could run at the AMS facility.
